Is Racism Really Just An Act of Love? What The Hell Is Love Then?

Banned Cartoon-
Betty Boop
Regarding the African American’s depicted in this cartoon:
Love the emphasis on the BIG LIPS and WATERMELON.
Cute. Real Adorable.

John Leland says it best in his book, “Hip: The History:”

It goes without saying
that much of the
stereotyping was degrading
 even where
 putatively affectionate
(192).

In other words….

Leland also said
“even if they were not
intended to be malicious, these stereotypes are the
gentle kiss
of
white supremacy” (193).

Maybe it’s just that….

As Henry Louis Gates Jr. has written,
“Afro-American history is full of examples of
‘racist’
benevolence, paternalism tempt or aggression….
‘Skip, sing me one of those old Negro spirituals that you people love so dear,’
or
‘You people sure can dance….’
These are racist statements, certainly, which can have rather
little to do with
 aggression or contempt in intent,
even if the effect is contemptible
 (but often ‘well intentioned’).”
(Leland 193)

Because of these perspectives,
I feel that most of humanity doesn’t even when racism is occurring even if it’s directly in front of us.

Our challenge has always been to stamp a concrete definition of racism into our psyches.
Cartoons seem so innocent.
Racism is immediately thought of as violent and an act of pure hatred.
Your average spectator
wouldn’t assume cartoons to be a place full of racism.

The picture shows this 1930's Sheet of Cartoon Character Tattoos.
This sheet contains tattoos of the likeness of Betty Boop, Kewpie Doll, Charlie Chaplin, and many others!

Leland quotes Chuck Jones in saying, “You must love what you caricature.”

Let’s first define love, then racism.
Now we can decide if these crude stereotypes are pure racism or an act of love.
“Good Luck”
(I say that with the most sarcastic yet optimistic tone of voice.)

Will Racism Still Exist in
10 years?

YES!

Thank you internet for providing an avenue in which to express such feelings.

Now racist/adoring fans will never feel alone.
