(Still throwing around a few ideas of what I think hip will “look” like in 10 years)
Robots. They seem so innocent until we realize they’ve been studying their prey (humans) the whole time. In terms of hip, I’m going to concentrate on hip’s definition of time and living in the present. It seems that if robots do become hip, most of the people utilizing them have no concern for the future of their actions except for maybe one or two geeky scientists who warned us in 2011.
Geselle, Theresa. Personal Interview. T.B.D.
I could also interview my mom about her hands-on experience about being a special education teacher for over 13 years and the recent trends she has seen. She has a lot to say. She also suggested I look into the subculture of aging hippies from the 1960s/70s eras. They may have more insight about the face of hip in ten years. A unique language, perspective on time, and an abundance of enlightenment may arise in this research.
Krause, Jens, Winfield, Alan F.T., Deneubourg, Jean-Louis. “Interactive robots in experimental biology.” Trends in Ecology & Evolution, In Press, Corrected Proof, Apr. 2011. Web 19 Apr. 2011 .
Robots. I watched a show on the “idiot box” that featured seven or so different types of experts arguing why they think there is one certain concern humanity should have regarding the end of the world. Lack of food and water were one, nuclear war was another, and then “when robots attack” came up. I thought it was pure buffoonery until I started my research on up and coming technologies with subject headings like, “Using robots as leaders,” and “Robots to embody personality types.”
Leland, John. Hip: the History. New York: HarperCollins, 2004. Print.
I’ll use this text as the main guide for comparing and contrasting between the multiple literary texts that mention in my essay. I’ll use examples Leland had researched and found to be hip as well as his own opinions in terms of the definition of hip.
McGuire, Dennis PhD. “If People With Down Syndrome Ruled The World.” Adult Down Syndrome Center of Lutheran General Hospital . Chicago , Illinois . July 2005. Plenary Address.
Special Needs folk will be hip in ten years and Dr. Dennis McGuire lets us know what it would be like if they ruled the world. I can compare this group of people with other hip groups in Leland’s book in terms of race, sexuality, and now mental capacity. To adapt with people that are different than them they have developed unique languages, patterns of behavior, and constantly demanding more equal rights.
I think if you met me, you wouldn't think I was geeky.
